The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
The Departments aim to graduate students who are aware of the personal qualities, knowledge, skills and attitudes required to cater for the reproductive health needs of women, and to provide sustained leadership in scientific investigation, outstanding patient care, and education by training the future leaders of our specialty. Our faculty is committed to the highest level of basic and clinical research in Obstetric & Gynaecologic science. In particular, we are focused on innovative translational medicine; bringing scientific results from the bench to the bedside.
During their clerkship, fourth and fifth year medical students receive bedside teaching, experience labour ward and theatre sessions and actually participate in management of cases. They are also given didactic lectures and tutorials regularly in the core syllabus of obstetrics and gynaecology.
Faculty of the Department is involved in the provision of Continuing Professional Development programmes for various health workers to upgrade skills in the management of obstetrics emergencies (EmOC), family planning and reproductive health. In collaboration with the Regional Health Directorate and other organizations, the Department undertakes free community outreach services in reproductive health and women’s health advocacy in communities within the University’s catchment area.
On-going research projects by faculty of the Department include a study of trends in caesarean deliveries in Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCT); review of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy at CCTH; review of outcomes of preterm deliveries at CCTH; quality of emergency obstetric referrals to a tertiary care centre in southern Ghana; and indications for caesarean section at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital: a five-year experience.
Faculty also made presentations at various national and international conferences notably the Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) of the society of Obstetricians & Gynaecologist of Ghana (SOGOG), the AGSM of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and at the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) conference in Canada.
