The Department of Haematology
The Department is yet to be officially set up although it has been functioning as such since the inception of the school. This has been so because until February2016, faculty had been mainly part-time. The Department runs two main modules – Blood I (302) and Blood II (509), and contributes to 3 other modules, 2 of which are new for the undergraduate MB. ChB. programme. Additionally Resident teaching and a journals club have started. Clinical work at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) has also began with the establishment of Haematology Clinics and provision of enhanced haemotology diagnostic support to the hospital, including bone marrow morphology. There are ongoing efforts to get accreditation for postgraduate training in laboratory medicine at Cape Coast. One member of faculty is an officer at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) as well as West African College of Physicians (WACP), which are the accrediting bodies for postgraduate specialist training.
We collaborate with all other departments but closely with internal Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Medical Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Surgery. There are current proposals to begin collaboration with Microbiology and Chemical Pathology on research into laboratory changes in HIV and sickle cell disease. Key achievements last academic year include the ability to run the Blood II module of the undergraduate course for the first time without the need for external part-time faculty and the new activities at the CCTH as listed above. We are also in the process of developing a laboratory at the school’s Diagnostic Centre.
