The Department of Internal Medicine and Therapeutics

The Department of Internal Medicine and Therapeutics of The School of Medical Sciences is based at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital where it merges functionally with the Teaching Hospital Department of Medicine under a University-appointed Head.

Our vision is to be recognized globally as an African center of excellence in internal medicine teaching, research and clinical practice. Our mission which informs our day to day practice, is to train undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors in the principles and practice of the internal medicine and therapeutics in a clinical and academic environment recognized for excellence in teaching and research and for putting our patients needs above all else.

We have successfully delivered the internal medicine content of the medical degree (MB ChB) curriculum to undergraduate medical students of the University of Cape Coast for the last four years and now provide postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and its subspecialties to qualified doctors working in the Teaching Hospital setting. We have recently been accredited by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons to deliver specialist Training in Internal Medicine.

Internal Medicine faculty is responsible for upwards of 25,000 out-patients and 1,500 in-patients each year at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. The bulk of in-patient clinical activity occurs on two acute medical wards and a Dialysis Unit which houses the second largest Dialysis Centre in the country. Specialist-led in-patient rounds and out-patient clinics in Adolescent Medicine (sickle cell, asthma, diabetes etc), Cardiology, Endocrinology and Diabetology, Gastroenterology, Dialysis and Neurology give patients and colleagues in other specialties access to specialist Internal Medicine input.

The Department collaborates with a number of institutions in the areas of teaching, healthcare delivery and research, notably the Ankaful Leprosarium and Hospital, the University of Cape Coast Hospital and the Kintampo Health Research Centre, respectively. Our teaching activities currently include all aspects of the undergraduate (MB ChB) and specialist (MGCP) Internal Medicine curricula. Faculty members are also involved in the teaching of relevant aspects of clinical medicine and the History of Medicine to students in the School of Nursing and Departments of History, respectively. In order to reach and maintain the highest possible standards in our teaching and clinical practice, faculty are also engaged in basic, clinical and community-based research in a number of areas including Diabetes, Hepatitis, Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Erectile Dysfunction, Cardiovascular Disease and Medical Education, among others.
